In September 2016, the Mirai botnet launched a series of DDoS attacks that were the largest the world had ever seen. These attacks caused outages at some of the world’s most popular hosting providers. In December 2017, the US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced the conclusion of their investigation into these attacks, and the guilty pleas of the actors responsible. This presentation is the untold story of how and why Mirai was developed, the competitive criminal DDoS ecosystem that contributed to its rapid evolution, and the international investigative team that raced to stop the attacks.
Elliott Peterson is a Special Agent with the FBI in the Anchorage Field Office. A member of Anchorage's Computer Intrusion Squad, he is responsible for investigating complex botnets, high dollar account takeover fraud, and Distributed Denial of Service attacks. Prior to joining the FBI, Elliott worked in Higher Education and served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from Dickinson College and a Master's Degree in Crime Analysis from Tiffin University.
